Empowering Co-op Students with Bioflex Laser & Chiropractic Mentorship
At DesLauriers Chiropractic Group Inc., we have proudly partnered with SFU Health Sciences and Kinesiology students through the Co-op program since 2014.
What Co-op Students Gain with Us
- Hands-On Experience with Bioflex Laser Therapy: Students gain direct experience with Bioflex Laser Therapy, a cutting-edge treatment used for pain management, tissue healing, and rehabilitation. This hands-on training prepares students to understand the practical applications of this technology in clinical settings.
- Mentorship from Experienced Chiropractors: Students have the opportunity to work closely with a licensed chiropractor who serves as a mentor, offering guidance, expertise, and real-world insight into the practice of chiropractic and patient care. This mentorship allows students to deepen their understanding of patient care, therapeutic techniques, functional anatomy and the integration of chiropractic and other health practices.
- Skill Development in Patient Care and Rehabilitation: In addition to laser therapy, students are exposed to a wide range of therapeutic modalities, learning how to assess and treat patients with various musculoskeletal conditions, injuries, and rehabilitation needs.
- Administrative Training in Practice Management & Patient Care: Students gain practical experience with essential administrative duties, including using Jane App software, scheduling appointments, and facilitating communication between patients and practitioners. They will also learn how to manage patient records, answer phone inquiries, coordinate appointments, and assist with insurance claim processing. Emphasis is placed on customer service, ensuring students foster a professional and positive environment.
- Professional Growth and Networking: Through their Co-op placement, students develop not only technical skills but also professional connections with industry leaders. These connections help pave the way for future career opportunities and provide a strong network of support as they embark on their healthcare careers.

Why This Matters
By offering our Co-op students the opportunity to learn Bioflex Laser Therapy and work with a chiropractor as their mentor, we are providing them with invaluable training that combines innovative technology with traditional healing practices. This unique, hi-tech, hi-touch experience helps shape future leaders in health sciences, kinesiology, and chiropractic care, preparing them for a successful career in the rapidly evolving field of therapeutic health.
We are excited to continue providing this enriching experience for Co-op students, helping them gain the skills and knowledge they need to make a meaningful impact in the world of healthcare.
What Our Past Co-Op Students Say
I was a previous SFU Co-op student who worked at DesLauriers Chiropractic Group Inc. as a full-time laser therapist and a clinical office assistant. My experience at this clinic was truly valuable and has helped further guide me towards my goal in becoming a future physiotherapist.
Working at this clinic has greatly improved my confidence, communication skills and multi-tasking skills. I feel much more ready for the work force in the future, and I am ready to continue my studies.

The unique opportunity of being a co-op student at DesLauriers Chiropractic Group Inc. offered me a firsthand glimpse into the dynamic association of healthcare administration and therapeutic intervention.
One of the most meaningful aspects of my role as a clinical office assistant was the invaluable exposure to the administrative intricacies of a healthcare setting. This experience enhanced my organizational and multitasking skills and gave me a comprehensive understanding of the behind-the-scenes operations contributing to efficient patient care.
The dual role of a cold laser therapist, on the other hand, allowed me to engage directly with patients on a therapeutic level. This hands-on experience deepened my appreciation for the human side of healthcare. Witnessing the positive impact of cold laser therapy on patients’ pain, range of motion, and enhanced well-being by applying theoretical and practical knowledge into actions.
Moreover, the daily interactions with patients illuminated the importance of effective communication and empathy in healthcare. As a health science student, although these soft skills are discussed during classes, experiencing their real-world application has been invaluable.
As I look back on this year, I carry forward not only enhanced skills and knowledge but also the courage to endeavour for something unexplored in the future.

The part of my co-op journey I appreciated and enjoyed the most was being able to interact with people on a daily basis. I also enjoyed learning anatomy from Dr. Pierre during the weekly meetings!
I was able to learn and improve many skills, but the skills that benefit me most today are interpersonal communication and multitasking!
I just finished my last semester at SFU and am currently working in an Events Assistant position. A little different from my position at the clinic, but I’m excited to see where this current path takes me!

As a laser therapist, it was enjoyable to hear as well as visually witness in some cases how the therapy helped with the condition that was being treated, even after only one session. It was rewarding to work one-on-one with patients of different ages and creating a comfortable space of care. It was nice to build relationships and learn patients’ stories over the multiple sessions and in turn see how the therapy was impacting their day-to-day lives.
After my Kinesiology degree from SFU, I went back to school for an advanced entry Bachelor in Nursing program. I am currently working as a Registered Nurse in pediatrics at BC Children’s.

The part of my co-op experience that I enjoyed the most at DesLauriers Chiropractic Group was being able to apply my health science knowledge directly in a clinical setting and work closely with patients. It was incredibly rewarding to see how the treatments could have a positive impact on patients’ pain management and recovery. I appreciated the hands-on experience of assessing patients’ conditions and working directly with the chiropractors in helping tailoring treatments to their individual needs. It was both fulfilling and motivating to witness the real-world effects of the therapies. It reinforced my passion for helping people improve their health and motivated me to pursue a Master of Public Health degree.
After completing my co-op, I went on to complete my Bachelor of Arts in Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. Shortly after graduating, I moved to Toronto where I worked in reproductive and public health research. I concurrently pursued a Master of Public Health from the University of Waterloo where I took many classes such as in epidemiology, public health surveillance and health administration. I graduated in 2020 and worked for one of the largest public health studies in Canada, the Ontario Health Study. This research study focuses on how lifestyle, genetic and environmental factors impact people’s health and risk for chronic disease. I then went on to work for the Public Health Agency of Canada in chronic disease surveillance where I collected and analyzed prevalence rates of chronic disease in over 20 countries. In 2021, I moved back to Vancouver and started working for Providence Health Care where I am currently the Senior Manager for Virtual Health. I lead all of the virtual health initiatives for the organization including clinical digital messaging, electronic patient questionnaires, virtual remote interpretation, virtual visits and remote patient monitoring. Through all of these roles, including during my co-op experience, the most important lesson I have learned is to have a patient-centered approach that comes from listening to an individual’s preferences, building trust and understanding each patient’s individual needs to promote health.
